Favorite Foto Friday - First Time

Remember the first time you did something? Did you take a picture? Let's see it!

I think this sort of fits. The first time Karla called me "Mama" was on our second visit trip to Guatemala in May 2008. It was about 4 o'clock in the morning our first morning together. She wasn't sleeping, of course! We were down in the playroom so Daddy could try to get some sleep. She looked at me, walked towards me and said "Mama" and then handed me a toy she had been carrying. I'll never forget that moment. I know her foster mother must have referred to me as "mama" because I hadn't started "working" on that with Karla yet. :) It was awesome!! I knew Karla knew who I was and I knew her foster mother had taken good care of her and I felt SOOO appreciative. It immediately brought tears to my eyes and made me want to race down the hotel hall to wake Jason....but I didn't. I just gave my little Karla a squeeze. And then told Jason the minute his eyes opened the next day.

Here is a picture of her in her PJs that same morning...a few hours later though. I actually did not have my camera with me at 4am.

Looking back at these pictures and noting how "sweaty" she was all the time and how little she slept at night, I am convinced she was suffering with asthma symptoms at that time and no one knew it. Poor thing. SOOOO glad we know what it is now and can treat it. I am afraid to say this but...Karla has been sleeping THROUGH the night pretty consistently for the past few weeks. A first time - ever! She is even sleeping in more too. She's not up and it is after 8am!!! Crazy!! Didn't think this would happen until she was a teenager. I realize now that I wrote this I'll probably be back to getting up once a night with her but...hopefully not. Hooray for sunshine, warm weather and scooters!!

Blue

Modeling her blue nail polish, blue toenails, and blue dress. She even had matching flip-flops too. It is all her!! She is a girly girl. She motivates me to try to look nicer or coordinate/match better some days! :)

The blue nails don't show up too well here...but you get the idea.

Now modeling "pink lipstick".

Our week

I think we're back to normal this week. Just allergies bothering us both. Last week I had to take Karla to the doctor because she was so congested (sinus infection)and her asthma was flaring up. She was wheezing and pretty miserable. She got an antibiotic and we had to increase her asthma meds a lot! I felt like all we were doing last week was breathing treatments with her nebulizer. Every 4 hours.... I can't complain (too much) because she feels better, it definitely helps her, and having a nebulizer at home is much better than the alternative.

Here are some random thoughts for this week:

*We went to Walmart at the end of last week and I had told Karla she could get any color nail polish she wanted. I didn't realize there were so many "odd" colors or I wouldn't have said exactly that. We were having a great time looking at all the different colors when she saw blue nail polish. She said "Oh Mommy! Blue! Your favorite color. I want blue because it is your favorite!" I just couldn't say no...even though now I wish I had. She's even told everyone (including the doc today) that she picked blue because it is my favorite color. So, Karla is sporting blue fingernails and toenails.

*We've been enjoying warm weather and sunshine!!! Karla continues to love her scooter and her swingset. She is also playing with other kids in the neighborhood this year! Last year she was perfectly content just playing with me...this year...she wants to be where the action is. Karla and our next door neighbor (who is exactly one year older than Karla) have really enjoyed playing with each other so far this year. Karla asks about the other little girl everyday. Well, the neighbors are moving. We've had some discussions about moving but Karla doesn't get it yet. She keeps saying "Is she back yet?" and almost cried when I was trying to explain it to her yesterday. They will be gone by the end of the week....so it could be an interesting few days. I think the new people moving in are going to have a 4 year old too...so hopefully Karla will hit it off with him/her.

*As for me, I'm trying to balance housework (laundry, cleaning, errands, cooking) with playing and being outside. I remember having this struggle when the weather got nice last spring/summer. When I get one job caught up (like laundry for example), something else falls way behind (like cleaning).

*Found out last week that I need surgery on my other wrist. I wasn't surprised because of how much it has been bothering me lately...but I was disappointed. Don't want to think about going through all that again...but need/want it fixed at the same time. Not sure when I will be having it done though. I am going to get a second opinion because I was not happy with my last doctor/surgeon.

*I haven't taken pictures in a while! I know what I'll be doing later today...

3 1/2

Last Monday Karla turned 3 1/2!!! Hard to believe! I'm not sure why I knew that was the day she turned 3 1/2 but I did.

We've both been under the weather so we didn't do anything to celebrate yet. We were just going to make some cookies. :)

Karla and I didn't leave the house for several days so we got to spend lots of time together. I think we both really enjoyed it! Not that we don't spend lots of time together usually but we spent lots of time cuddling on the couch, reading, and just resting together. Didn't worry about anything else...I feel sorry that Jason didn't get dinner, clean laundry or a clean house but oh well...he survived. :) It was nice to just focus on rest and each other. It always amazes me that she seems to sense when I don't feel good and is able to entertain herself more and even ask me how I'm doing. Seems like I get more hugs too. :)

Back to being 3 1/2...

For Mother's Day Grammy and Pap-Pap helped Karla make a card for me. On the inside of the card she wrote the words "love" and "Karla." I have tried many times to get her to write a few letters. She won't do it though. As soon as she knows that I want her to do it...forget it! Anyway, she had minimal help writing the letters. She was given a model to look at but that was it! I couldn't believe it! Then Jason had her write "mommy" on the envelope for a card....she did it without help or a model!!!! I love that the only word she can spell by herself is "mommy." :) She can get most of Karla but not all of it without some assistance. Then she was helping me make dinner in the kitchen the other night (something she wants to do every night now) and I had some cornmeal spread out on a dish. She asked if she could touch it and I said yes. When I looked over at her again she had made an "A" in the cornmeal. I asked her what it was and she said an "A"...and proceeded to make a K, L, A, M. I couldn't believe it! The little stinker! I didn't know she could do that because she refuses when I ask her. I'd even bought her a PRINCESS workbook for tracing letters....she won't even look at it even though the princesses are inside!

Here is a picture of of the card on the left and the envelope on the right.

NEW NIECE

Her little leg just kept popping up....perhaps this is why she was breech.

Look at the fingers!!

So cute! Can't wait to kiss those cheeks. :)

Brenda and Russ had their little girl late last night. She was born at 10:13 pm PT and weighed 5lbs 14oz. They still haven't named her yet. They don't know that her aunt is going crazy waiting for a name!! Will post the name when I know it. :)

Christmas in May

Two weekends ago now...I went to a consignment sale with my mom-in-law, as is our tradition now. We go twice a year and Karla gets most of her clothes there. Then the next day my mom came over and the three of us and Pap-Pap went to our annual garage sale in a large local housing plan. Even though Karla didn't need much...she got stuff! I was actually good and only gave her half of what I bought for her. I'm going to spread it out through the year. The bulk of what I bought was Barbie stuff.

My favorite purchase was a scooter and helmet. She LOVES it! She has a little bike and a little motorized "quad" but has never really spent tons of time on them. The scooter is different! She wants to scoot around the neighborhood everyday. I think she looks so stinkin' cute with the helmet on and her little legs going. I honestly think she likes it because most of the kids in the neighborhood have one and that is what they are riding all the time. It may be easier for her too. She's finally learning to steer with the scooter! With the bike and quad she'd be busy talking or looking at something and forget to steer. Here is a picture of her on the day she got the scooter.
Ready, set, go!

Okay...here's another.
Did you see how cute? And the excitment?

Karla's knees have been bruised and bloodied but she is getting better (and Jason pretty much forbid me from buying her knee pads like I want to).

Here's the new Barbie car...just like one I played with when I was little.

Next time I'll have to post pictures of the leotards Grammy bought Karla....oh and she got tap shoes and ballet shoes too. Yes, Karla is pretty happy right now!

Happy Mother's Day, Mom!
