Busy Weekend

Saturday morning started with an eye doctor appointment for each of us. It was Karla's first trip to the eye doctor so Jason and I made our check-ups on the same day so she could see us during our exams and then have her exam. We've been talking about it for a week and I thought she was excited. I really thought she wouldn't have any trouble doing whatever needed to be done. Well, Jason went first and then they moved him to a different room. Long story short - she wouldn't do anything unless she was on Daddy's lap. We got him to come back in the room and she did everything they asked her too! I couldn't believe it. Glad he was there though! :) She did the eye test with the E turned various ways. She had to hold up her hand with three fingers out (like an E) in the same way the E on the wall pointed. I, for some reason, didn't expect her to do it or understand it. But she did! Jason and I thought it was so cute to see her sitting there, looking at the Es on the wall and moving her little fingers in the right direction (from Daddy's lap, of course). Her eyes looked healthy so she got a good report!

Next we took a family trip to Chik Fil A. :)

Then Saturday night Karla and Jason went to the Pirates game! It was Karla's first MLB game. I wasn't able to convince Jason to take the camera...but he did send me a few pictures from his phone. One of Karla's friends from church is turning two this month (Happy Birthday Gavin!) and got to have his party in one of the Pirate suites! It sounded like they had a great time...got to meet the Pirate Parrot and everything. I was invited too but needed to do some things for today and, honestly, I really needed and enjoyed some alone time. I do hope Gavin has another birthday party at a game though (hint, hint Jess).

Today Jason and Karla went to church together and then went to Grammy and Pap-Pap's for most of the day. Lots of Karla and Daddy time this weekend! I stayed home and hosted a baby shower for my good friend Julie. I had lots of great helpers and had a fun day! Most importantly, Julie got some great gifts and had a good time. :)

Is it MY bedtime yet? :)

I'll leave you with a picture of Karla. Here she is laying in bed with her baby (Oso) in her "belly" - "just like Tia Brenda."

Jumpin' Castle

Last week Karla and I went to a new place in town called Jumpin' Castle with our friends Jen, Austin, and Chase. It was lots of fun!

Karla was a little intimidated by the slide at first (I was too!) After watching Austin go down a few times, she tried it. :) Here she is at the bottom with Chase watching closely.

Jen went down the slide with Austin and Karla. I got a great picture but I'm not sure if Jen would want me to post it. :) So, since Jen went down I felt like I had to go down with Karla when she asked me to... It was fun!

Karla saw this throne as soon as we arrived. She sat in it several times and was the "queen."

Jumpin around!

While there I saw a child I used to work with, at least 3 years ago. I barely recognized her! She is 7 now and didn't remember me...which is fine. But the grandma remembered me. It was one of my favorite families. I had met both grandmas and knew both of the little girl's parents. It was really nice to see a "patient" doing so well!

Saddened

I am truly saddened by the freeze on Russian adoptions. It sounds hopeful that they will continue but it doesn't ease the heartache of waiting children and waiting families.

In a CNN article:
"I would say to American families that are in the process of adoption, not to worry too much," said John Beyrle, U.S. ambassador to Russia. "We're working on this and we really don't think that this will have any long-term effect on the ability of American families to adopt here."

How can you help but worry if your heart, your child is in another country???

We Are The Truth

This is a post in support of the Joint Council for International Children’s Services (JCICS). This post is partly a copy of an email sent to me by JCICS along with some commentary from me. :)

You may have heard that last week a 7 year old boy was “returned” to Russia after being in the US for 6-7 months with his adoptive mother. She claims that he had severe psychological problems, etc..

I have many thoughts and opinions on this issue….most of them angry at the situation!

The outrageous treatment of “Justin” by his adoptive family has rightfully resulted in outrage by the Governments of Russia and the United States and all who care about children. The tragedy has cast a light on intercountry adoption that says it is not safe, the system failed and adopted children cause insurmountable problems. The heartbreak of this boy’s abandonment has once again elevated a singular incident to a level which may result in the suspension of intercountry adoption. Suspending adoption, even temporarily, will only cause thousands of children to suffer the debilitating effects of life in an orphanage.

As an adoptive parent, I know what it is like to have international adoptions threatened to be stopped AND actually stopped. It is NOT good. Not good for the families waiting or for the children needing homes!

Obviously, the outrageous and indefensible actions of one parent are not indicative of how children are treated by adoptive families. Families who encounter difficulties do not simply abandon their child. Help is available, solutions can be found and families can thrive. Suspending adoption does not protect children but only subjects them to the depravity of an institution…and an entire life without a family.

In an article on MSNBC’s webpage there is a quote in an article saying “Parents enter into it (foreign adoption) with positive motivations but, in a sense, they are a little bit blindsided by their desire to adopt.” I whole-heartedly disagree with this statement. If you’ve ever been through the homestudy process you are beaten over the head with all of the bad things that could happen, the horror stories, the possibilities….you are asked what you would do in a hundred hypothetical situations. I remember crying the very first time our social worker left our house almost 4 years ago now because I thought “what are we doing?? Our child will have so many problems. Should we go through with this?” I know Jason remembers that day too! That was before we even completed all the paperwork and background checks! I am really questioning where this lady that adopted this boy got her homestudy done. Maybe it was not a reputable place. I guess time will tell. I think often times adoptive parents are very ready parent a child and are more open to less than ideal situations because they’ve often waited many years and have seen their family and friends have children and discover that not every child is born “perfectly” or without concerns. And yes, I’m speaking from experience.

It truly is a shame that ONE negative situation can get so much publicity and possibly halt adoptions to another country. Too bad good situations (probably the majority of adoptions) can’t get some great publicity!

JCICS requested that today people blog about their positive adoption experience.
I know that most everyone who reads my blog already knows our adoption story - maybe more than they really want to. :) You also know that we are so happy to have our daughter, who just happens to be adopted. So, I just blogged about this current, controversial situation. I still don't see how someone would not think of adoption as permanent....and to think you could "return" a child???

Here is a more positive adoption article if you are interested.

Favorite Foto Friday: Easter

This is a picture of Karla last Friday.

As I was looking through pictures of Easter weekend I was disappointed to see that I forgot to take a picture of Karla dressed up. I had also wanted to take a picture of the three of us together!

You can visit Annie's Blog and add your own Favorite Foto Friday link to the MckLinky.

Easter

Friday we went to a local church's Easter Eggstravaganza. We had to park our cars a distance from the church and then they bused people to the church on school buses. Well, Karla could have just rode on a school bus that day and she would have been happy. She was EXCITED to be on a school bus "like big kids". She did an Easter egg hunt, bouncy castles, and a big inflatable slide. We went with Grammy and Pap-Pap since they had the day off. Just as we got to the big slide Pap-Pap saw one of his students from school so he had her help Karla up the big slide. It is a good thing too because Karla really wanted to go up and I don't think she could have done it without some help! I was amazed at how much braver she is now...I don't think she would have done the bouncy things or the slide 6 months ago, especially without a friend that she is familiar with! She saw one of the bouncy house things as soon as the egg hunt was over and made a bee-line for it! How did she even know what it was?!? The weather was sunny and HOT! It was a perfect day for the festivities. I'm looking forward to going again next year. The only thing we didn't get to do was sit on the Easter bunny's lap. We waited too long and they started turning people away so the Easter bunny could leave on time. :)

Minutes before the egg hunt began...

Loving all the bouncing!

Inflatable slide....yes, that is Karla with the "balloon" dress and her underwear showing.

Saturday Grandma and Grandpa came over. We all went to church for Karla's choir rehearsal. The children's choir was singing Easter Sunday. Last Easter was the first time Karla attempted to sing in the choir...and she ended up not going up in front when it was time (she just wanted her Mommy) and that was fine, I didn't mind! This year she was excited to go up. She didn't sing a whole lot I don't think but I thought she did a fine job for being the youngest kid up there!

Isn't it a great blessing that Karla has now been home for TWO Easters!?!? I kept thinking about that this weekend. I'm so thankful!

Anyway, Karla had a good time with her grandma and grandpa. They gave her an Easter gift and some new flip-flops. She has hardly taken the flip-flops off!!!

Helping peel potatoes for our "Easter dinner"

Sunday morning Karla came into our bedroom when she woke up and was standing right by my head when I woke up. She said "Mommy, is it Easter time now?" Even though I could have kept sleeping I had to smile and get up because it was so cute how excited she was. She knew it was time to get an Easter basket! We all got up and went downstairs to find her Easter basket. I loved watching her pull things out that I knew she would love! I did (accidentally) go overboard and got her more things than she needed for Easter. Everything did not fit in the basket! She was very excited about each thing and acted so surprised. She is funny!

Then we went to church and actually had behavior issues there for the first time, so I missed most of the service. Thankfully the children's choir sang at the beginning of the service...

The rest of the day got better. She took a decent nap and then we went to have dinner with Grammy, Pap-Pap, and both Tio Ryan and Tio Kevin. There was also another egg hunt with more chocolate and more Easter baskets!!

We had a really great Easter weekend!

I'm going to have to upload pictures to flickr soon because I have so many to share! :)

American Idol

With the exception of this past week, Karla and I have been watching "American Idol." I have never really watched it much before but when my mom was here for my surgery, we started watching it and discovered Karla really likes to watch people sing. It also means I get a break from Dora and Max and Ruby!

Karla is funny when we watch the show. She notices the shoes, the clothes, the hair, the make-up...stuff I wouldn't even notice. She knows most of the contestants names and can remember what they did in previous weeks (I can't always do that!). When asked who her favorite contestant is, she always says, "I just love the judges." I don't know why she says that - but she says it every time!

Please click HERE to view a video of Karla, the next American Idol. For those of you who think Karla is quiet....be prepared. This is the REAL Karla and, as Karla says, "THIS IS....AMERICAN IDOL!!!!"

She mostly sings the word "love" in this video, followed by "I love them" and more "love." She adds "ballet moves" toward the end. Usually she won't perform if she is being video taped, so we were lucky with this one!

I hope you can view the video. I've been trying to post it for 2 weeks...
